Online Dating Profile: Humor a Must
After a long, stressful day or week at work, do you think a woman would rather spend her valuable free time with some guy who constantly engages her in serious mundane conversations, or with a fun upbeat guy who gets her laughing so much that after a couple minutes she totally forgets her troubles.
To this effect, when writing your online dating profile you need to show a woman what type of experience she can expect if she goes out with you.
If you can get her laughing and feeling good while reading your profile, you stand a much better chance of getting a response then if you just write out some sterile list of what you want in a woman, or start droning on about your life history. In the latter case, women are going to stop reading half way through your monotonous soliloquy and move on to the next guy.
Below are the profiles two different guys submitted to a popular online dating site. See if you can see the difference:
———————
Me? Where to begin . . . Well, I got my first passport one week after my fifth birthday and was an expat-brat before I could spell kindergarten. I spent most of my childhood and adolescence living in Europe, and believe this experience had a significant impact on the decisions I would make as an adult. Upon receiving a master’s degree in international business, I took the first expat assignment offered to me, coincidentally one week after my 24th birthday (mas o menos).
Four more international assignments followed, all of which were stimulating, challenging, and just plain fun (some more than others, for certain). In between two of those assignments (Mexico and Belgium) I spent three years working in Chicago at my company’s corporate HQ. I loved living here then, and recently moved back. I left the corporate scene a few years back to work as a consultant. This change has provided me with a much greater opportunity to feed my appetite for travel, adventure and freedom.
I’m a believer in the value of hard work, personal responsibility, character, integrity, chivalry and the importance of showing respect, sympathy and empathy towards others. My family is important to me, and my closest friends, though scattered across the globe, have been a big part of my life for many years.
I also love to laugh and make others laugh. I have a very dry sense of humor. Sometimes I’m so dry I’m not even funny.
You: You are bright, witty, independent, compassionate, curious and beautiful inside. You are proud of your achievements and are looking for that special guy to add to your life. You revel in your femininity, but have no problem hiking in the mud or rafting in rain. You’re willing to try new things and enjoy offering new experiences to those you’re with.
I believe that the foundation for a strong relationship begins with that spark; the chemistry; the butterflies. From there, mutual, heartfelt and genuine respect leads to a strong partnership where one plus one equals three. Both people get a kick out of doing the little things for each other, and both validate, support and inspire the other.
If you’re out there, I’d love to meet you.

Now here is an example of a different online profile:
ME: Man of integrity and substance wearing self-deprecating sense-of-humor suit. Dwells on the negative; cannot be saved.
Attractive, fit. No peanut butter & jelly belly here-okay maybe a little around the ankles, but can run 1 block in high top army boots.
Always the best looking in police line-ups. Semi-intelligent; work at being an above average sepller and can correctly pronounce “victuals.” Good conversationalist after ice breaks.
Definite sense of humor. Like to play. Like to laugh. Have the World’s largest collection of air guitars. Played Triangle in past life. Bargain-hunter. Shoe and coat hog. Favorite fruit chocolate. Sometimes difficult to understand but very easy to love and get along with.
YOU: Must be comfortable in waders or stockings and heels. Only interested in girls born in the year of the pig and the rabbit (just kidding).
Must have big dowry including farm animals – goats a plus. Must have most of own teeth. Will empty pockets for right girl.

After reading each of these profiles, which guy do you think would be the most fun to hang out with?
The first guy sounds like he’s had a very interesting life and probably has a lot of long-winded stories to tell about his world travels, but my eyes started to glaze over part way through my reading.
By the time I finished, I actually felt slightly exhausted. He seems to take himself quite seriously, and I really can’t imagine sitting and listening to this guy going on and on about his life, no matter how interesting his experiences.
Now maybe he is a very fun and engaging guy in person, but that’s not what I got out of his profile.
Now, while the first guy says he likes to make people laugh, I didn’t have the slightest urge to laugh once while reading his post. In contrast, the second guy had me laughing out loud several times in a profile that was 1/3 as long. He obviously has a much lighter and fun view of life than the first guy, and seems to be a guy that would be fun to hang out with no matter what you’re doing.
One lesson here is that when writing your profile or answering a woman’s profile, try not to take yourself too seriously. If you keep things playful and light, you will not only have much more success, but you will have a lot more fun in the process. The other lesson is to not just explain your personality, but try to demonstrate it throughout your profile.
